This is probably the first magazine of it’s kind for teen girls. Most of these other teen magazines, such as Teen People (I like it, but sadly it’s true), YM, Seventeen (check the cover; it becomes obvious that this isn’t a magazine for younger teens), and Cosmogirl are too fashion/gossip/make-up/boy obsessed. Instead of focusing on all of that stuff, Teen Voices covers world issues and controversial topics. Some of the topics they have featured in past issues of the magazine have been the many different faces of the female, the way girls feel about their bodies, relationship with their family members, vegetarianism, and the flag controversy. One point the magazine makes is that it’s a magazine for teens by teens. As proof of this, all the stories are written by teens. For lighter reading this magazine does have an interview with a celebrity. However, none of these celebrity interviews are fluffy; the selected celebrities are intelligent and can make some good points. For those people interested in this magazine, I recommend also checking out the website. My final recommendation on this magazine is that it’s great for any teen girl who wants to know what’s up in the world without having to sort through all the fluffy stuff to find it.
Addresses many issues such as sexism, racism, drug abuse and eating disorders through the voices of teenage girls around the country.

Former Intern For Teen Voices Magazine – GML – Boston, MA
As a former intern for Teen Voices, I may be biased, but I really think that what they are doing is amazing. Their magazine focuses on real things that teenage girls can relate to like teen pregnancy, suicide, family issues, body image issues, and many other topics, as opposed to how to get a boy to like you, how to lose weight, or what kind of make up to use. Teen Voices aims to empower young females by helping to give them the confidence that they need and letting them know that they are not alone.
Have not received it nearly six months after ordering. – Your Mom – Oxford, MS USA
I ordered this magazine and Teen Ink in late 2005 as Christmas gifts for my teen daughters. We’ve received a few issues of Teen Ink since then, but no sign of Teen Voices as of May 2006.
Love This! – –
This magazine focuses on real issues and is written by real girls. A feminist bias is apparent at times, but usually it focuses on what everyone has to say about date rape, racism, pregnancy, abortion, etc. For girls 13-21 who like Seventeen but need something a bit more focused (i.e., without fashion and beauty spreads.)

If you had to choose one, go with the original People – Alydia’s Mom – Midwest
Good thing I got on sale for for the year. I love People magazine. I figured this would be icing on the cake, but it doesn’t compare. I’m not too into fashion, so it doesn’t appeal to me. I find that I put in in a pile and never read it.
Fun to read – Joyce – Wellington, FL
Was thrilled to receive a special offer from Amazon for People Style Watch. It’s a fun magazine!
7 and 1/2 Weeks Later and… – Sahar – Illinois
Still no magazine. I can’t rate the content, but the service is obviously poor. I ordered 5 magazine subscriptions all around the same time. 3 came so quickly that I’ve gotten more than 1 issue, already. The 4th came a couple of weeks ago. Still waiting for this one. They should at least send some kind of notification.

As a teenager, I think that this magazine beats all else.
In my earlier teen years, I read magazines like J-14 and Twist, which did not seem to give me much else other than celebrity gossip and horoscopes (things I can read online but wouldn’t pay for).
Then, a couple years ago, I started reading Seventeen. This provided me with advice on boys, fashion (although this tends to be the section I skip over the most. I do, however, enjoy the occassional laugh at some overly eccentric outfits they put together), sex, and diet and exercise (as a vegetarian, I love the few but helpful vegetarian diet suggestions). I love that it gives us real advice that we can relate to and go out and do. Also, the fashion (the ones that aren’t unnecessarily flamboyant) is affordable and always gives advice according to your body shape (and isn’t just skinny so those that aren’t model types can look fantastic too), which gives us more confidence that we can look good.
In addition, there are some small little things that make this magazine truly unique. There are the letters from the editor about what’s coming up and what has happened recently, and there is sometimes a story from one of the staffers about their life and the troubles they’ve been through with guys and such, and inspiring stories about girls that have done something great with their lives.
Overall, I think this magazine is wholesome and good for the average teenage girl now, because the stories and the advice this magazine provides us with perfectly fit with what we’re going through and the society we live in now. Sure, I’ve become a little bit more shallow by reading it, but I’ve also become more aware of the things going on around me through the different stories. So I lost a little of my sanity, but I gained a lot more back in knowledge and awareness.
Who Reads Seventeen?
Seventeen readers want a guide where they can find everything important, all in one place. Seventeen’s fashion-conscious, trendy readers are interested in the latest beauty and style trends. Comparisons to Other Magazines:
Over the past five decades, Seventeen has helped shape teenage life in America. Seventeen has represented an important rite of passage, helping to define, socialize and empower young women. Seventeen has been a significant force for change—creating notions of beauty and style, proclaiming what’s hot in music and movies, identifying social issues, celebrating the idols and icons of popular culture. One of the most buzz-worthy programs is the “Seventeen Body Peace Project,” a year-long initiative to help girls stop obsessing about what their body looks like, start appreciating it for what it can do, and ultimately make peace with their bodies. Seventeen also partnered with MySpace, the largest social networking site, to launch the ground-breaking Web reality program “Freshman 15,” which gives millions of teens an inside scoop on the often overwhelming emotional and lifestyle changes taking place at college.
Advertising:
Seventeen readers have a passion for a variety of products. Advertisers include fashion, retail, footwear, accessories, beauty and health products. These range from luxury goods to everyday essentials targeted to fashion conscious, trendy young women.
—————————–
The perky authority on all things girl since 1944, Seventeen magazine still provides advice and encouragement to masses of young misses. Although the primary focus is fashion and famous folk, this teen zine is not mere eye candy. Mixed among the cutting-edge styles (and multitudinous ads) you’ll find short but plentiful articles. Topics range in import: fluff stuff like “What Will You Wear Back to School?” and “The Ultimate Ponytail Guide” is balanced by heavier fodder, such as “No One Believes I Was Raped” and pieces on having a gay sibling and the dangers of binge drinking. Skewed largely toward a Caucasian teen audience, the magazine’s coverage of beauty and relationship conundrums does offer nods to young women of color. The tone is resolutely positive, and amid all the talk of must-have hairdos and hottie alerts, the message is girl power in its most nonthreatening guise. –Brangien Davis
Seventeen is a general service magazine for young women emphasizing fashion, beauty and lifestyle information, including health, food, careers, relationships, sports and entertainment.

Great Magazine at a Lower Price
– Iris Guzman –
This magazine is great! It has great tips for beauty & style, but also goes into more detail for other things such as college life and nutrition & fitness. A normal 2-year subscription is around but I only paid around for it! I recommend this magazine for all teen girls, its fun & helpful!
Have to edit – N. Webb –
After seeing that her 15 yr old cousins read this (and even some of her 12-13 yr old friends!), my daughter and I had a lot of discussions over whether I would allow her to start getting this magazine or not. We looked into other magazines that I thought were more appropriate (seem to be a lot for 8-12 yr old girls but not too many for 12-17 yr old girls) for a 12 yr old. Finally I agreed to let her get this magazine only on the condition that I see it first and edit out the inappropriate articles, etc. I don’t need my 12 yr old learning how to “hook up” etc.
Great gift subscription for a young teen! – J. Arena – Williamsburg, VA
I read Seventeen Magazine back in the olden days, and it’s still a good magazine today. It’s got great advice on fashion, make-up, getting along in school socially and academically — it’s all here!
I purchased this for a family member just starting out in high school, and I know that she will love it as much as we did back then!

This is a great magazine. I bought a subscription for my 12 yr. old niece. This is 1 of her favorites to read. If you want all the gossip on young Hollywood, then this is the perfect magazine. This was definitely a great gift for her and well worth the price.
Music, Movies, and More – find it in M, the teen entertainment magazine where you get all the entertainment news. Featuring exclusive news and amazing photos of your favorite celebs like BSB, N Sync, Britany and more.

M magazine – John Thomas –
I’m not a reader of M, rather I’ve been purchasing subscriptions for my niece, as a Christmas gift. She loves the magazine, so I am happy to sign her up each year. The company is great at starting the new subscription when the old one is finished. Thanks!

I ablotley adore this magizine! It has all my favorite stars i dont think it is good for little kids like 8 year olds because it has nothing they are intrested in. I think it is best to be 10 and up because then you are more inrested in beatuy, Hair, Boys, Gossip, And celebs. It like star, US weekly but for teens!
I love this magizine! Oh yah for twilight fans it has plenty of robert pattison kirsten stweart and taylor launter!.
The #1 Teen Celebrity Magazine!

I HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS PURCHASE AS OF YET – MS.DONTA – LUBBOCK,TX
I REALLY DONT REALIZE WHY I HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS ITEM YET ITS GOING ON 6 WEEKS AND HAVE ALREADY BEEN CHARGED.SO IM UNABLE TO RATE THIS PRODUCT.
Yet another tweenybopper mag – AM – GA USA
J-14 has once again gone into the realm of being yet another trashy tweenager magazine which we only buy for the cheap posters. This magazine has really boring articles, cheap posters, cheesy quizzes, and a cover which looks like somebody threw a bunch of pictures of teen stars onto a piece of paper.
The articles are insanely boring and mainly cover stuff that we don’t care about. “Miley Cyrus has an allowence!”,”OMG Ashley Tisdale likes chocolate chip cookies”. Who really cares about this stuff? I want to hear stories about tween stars admitting they are pregnant, or have cheated on their boyfriends. REAL ARTICLES RATHER THAN CHEAP STORIES! The main reasons the articles are this bad are either a) they don’t want to let the kiddie readers about the REAL lives of celebrities, b) the reporters of these magazine have no idea how to get real gossip out of a celebrity. Plus the articles are soo short and the magazine is 80% posters.
The posters are also very cheap and they are soo bright that they are kinda eye soring. They pose no real value and make the celebrities look like 10 year olds.
Then there are the quizzes. The quizzes are nothing more than stuff like “What type of flirt are you”, and “Are you a good friend?”.
The cover I think is almost the worst part. It has no structure and it is basicaly a mixture of photos, bright colors, and misleading headlines. For example: An issue could read “Miley spills major secrets” and her secret is “She has Solja boy on her ipod”. They make us think we are getting a real good story, but it always turns out to be something we don’t care about.
J-14 magazine truelly is terrible and if you want a good magazine go read Seventeen, Vogue, or something that’s artices aren’t “Selena Gomez has 32 Veera Bradley purses!”
Awesome Magazine – –
I got one every month. Super Cheap to get them from amazon! love the articles, posters, and gossip in this magazine.
Dumb, but fun – K. Ball – New York
I know these books are trash. I buy them for posters.
I’m 14 and the only time i actually read them is at my
camp when it’s raining. Plus, that’s a tradition, to buy
trashy, cheap, filled with strictly gossip information
and read them and see how low people can go. I mean
look at Kate and John Gosselin. =[ oh well.

This magazine is SUPER cheap. I paid for TWO YEARS of this magazine.
pros: no wallflowers here. This magazine is different. I have seen the evolution of this mag since the first issue and so glad they got rid of the gossip section. My favorite part is the DIY clothing transformation. The spreads have also been super saturated lately. The size is super cute and handy.
cons: no one would wear this stuff. The ads and the strange combinations of clothing articles contrast greatly. They make those poor girls wear the strangest things. I suspect some of the pairings are completely random and last minute. The writing is very simple. The articles are a rehash of teen issues that have been going on for decades. Vogue articles, on the other hand, are delicious to read.
I am 22 and I feel like I had outgrown the magazine. I am not sure which magazine to move on to, if at all. It was a cheap fun surprise each month while it lasted.
Who Reads Teen Vogue?
Teen Vogue is a fashion magazine for teenagers who are passionate about style, the fashion industry, beauty, health, and entertainment news. Published ten times a year, it represents the best in teen fashion through gorgeous photography, world-class styling, access to the fashion industry’s brightest stars, and breaking news about health and family issues, as well as beauty tips. The Teen Vogue reader is a young woman engaged with life through style, education, giving back (as seen in the regular Charity page), and an interest in beauty and health. Its most ardent readers even go so far as buying two copies of the magazine each month — one for ripping out pages to paste on their walls and in their inspiration boards, and one to read and save forever as part of their “style library.”

Contributors:
Contributors are culture- and style-obsessed writers and editors who know the scoop on fashion, music and movies way before the rest of the world. They’re experts at spotting trends that teens will want to wear every season, and they cover health topics and beauty secrets that matter to our readers.
Magazine Layout:
An intensely visual magazine, Teen Vogue features modern, vibrant fashion stories photographed by some of the best photographers in the world, including Bruce Weber, Patrick Demarchelier, Arthur Elgort and David Bailey. They travel across the world and back to locations that imbue our stories with a sense of adventure, sophistication and chic originality. At the same time, it also prides itself on delivering breaking news about health and relationship trends, as well as offering advice about breaking into the fashion industry as a whole.
Comparisons to Other Magazines:
Teen Vogue touches on relationships here and there, sure, but its reason d’etre is style, and to that end, it covers fashion news, travel around the world to photograph the coolest clothes in exotic settings (China, India, the Caribbean… the list goes on!), and deliver the most amazing new music and movies, college reports, and career advice instead of dispensing boy advice, quizzes, and embarrassing stories.
Advertising:
There is a close synergy between the advertisers in Teen Vogue, the actual content of the magazine, and the brands that readers love. It’s basically seamless — and driven by fashion at both the high end as well as more affordable sportswear and action brands. Each issue features an “In This Issue” section, which lists all fashion credits from our major stories, as well as URLs and phone numbers that allow readers to contact the companies. Teen Vogue’s advertising is wholly relevant and targeted toward the fashion-forward, culture- and beauty-obsessed teen.

Teen Vogue is a class act – Suki – Middle of the nation, USA
My daughter gets 17, and she enjoys its, but I like the Teen Vogue because it is a little less casual and a little classier. With both publications, she is well balanced.
Great Deal! – Brooklyn –
You have to get this subscription! It is incredible how much you can get out of these magazines. You get at least value of only you paid for. I love this!! Only problem I had was the shipping. My first issue came 6 months late but they make up for the issues you lost.
Perfect for aspiring fashionistas – Ziggy Dynamite – Hawaii
I absolutely love this magazine. The photos are beautiful, the clothes are to die for and it has some very interesting stories. I am now a freshman in college and I have been reading teen vogue since I was probably a sophomore in high school. Its great for people who are into the fashion scene. They always have articles about inside the fashion industry and stories from real people who share their experiences and give advice on how you to can be a part of fashion. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like this magazine.

I have a subscription. And the reason why I have one is for the fact that the magazine is a highly sought after collectible as is Vogue, Seventeen, and Sports Illustrated For Kids, (all of which can be found on Amazon.com ,. As for the contents, well, if you’re into cheerleading in general, you’ll want and need to read its contents. It covers the major competition results and schedules for upcoming events. It has fashion news, how to’s for various routines, and bios on select cheerleaders and squads. It has tons of photos, and unlike some magazines on the market today which seem to be only aimed at publishing articles about sex, American Cheerleader is dedicated to the sport and ART of cheerleading. It is mainly aimed at cheerleaders in high school and college, but has a Junior cheerleader section. From time to time it features bios on celebrities who’ve cheered, and keeps up with current news concerning the world of cheerleading. If you want to keep up with what is going on in cheerleading, you’ll want to order a subscription to American Cheerleader!!!
AMERICAN CHEERLEADER is edited for young people engaged in the athletic activity of cheer leading. It contains articles on both cheer leading and lifestyle topics. Cheer leading-related features include dance routines, competition dates and results, training and safety, and developing peak performances. Lifestyle columns cover skin care and makeup, fashion, health and nutrition, and relationships with peers and parents. Both celebrities who are former cheerleaders and outstanding active cheerleaders and coaches will be profiled in every issue.

BEST mag for cheerleaders!!! – starvingartist60 – TX
Notice that all cheerleaders who have “reveiwed” this mag gave it 5 stars, and the other people who aren’t or hate cheerleaders gave it one, naming it trash. Well if I was rating a basketball mag, I wouldn’t give it a high score either!!!
***Why would you rate/ buy this magazine if you weren’t a cheerleader in the first place?!? If you hate cheerleading, don’t get the magazine!
*I cheer for 2 high school & All-star competitive teams
Geared to squad members, not coaches – curvynovelsdotinfo – Maine, USA
but I still enjoy flipping through its pages along with my girls, and find the articles on cheers, chants and stunts to be most helpful.
Just ok – Poodley Beagle Ellis –
I got a subscription for my birthday and I won’t be renewing it. Every once in a while you get an interesting article but a lot of it is kinda boring and looks like it comes from a doctor, not a magazine writer. I wouldn’t reccomend it for people that aren’t CHEERLEADERS (I am on a middle school pom squad) because you can’t relate to it as well.

Honestly, there are some “girls” magazines on the market so risque, I feel like I should be wearing a trench coat and sunglasses purchasing them discreetly in DENMARK instead of the USA. One of them (I won’t mention the title, but I’m sure many parents will recognize just from my description) claims it is for girls ages 8 to 14, but you’d swear by looking at the cover articles it would be meant for Playgirl readers. A few examples direct from the magazine are: Five Fresh Ways To Get That Guy, What’s your flirt style?, Get your Best body. And it seems (well, most of the time it actually is) that the magazine’s main focus is about how to get a guy or look good for him.
Now, as for DISCOVERY GIRLS, Just-The-Opposite!!! Here is a magazine I’d gladly get for any girl as a gift. It’s main focus is on friendships, but it covers an array of issues of interest to girls ages 8 and up.
It covers fashion (and their fashions are modest/down to earth fashions), celebrities, fun projects, and social issues. A few examples of past articles include: Spotlight on Volleyball, ditched by your friends, win free stuff. Another plus about the magazine is that it is highly collectible!!!
So if you want a magazine you can feel comfortable giving your daughter as a gift or buying for someone else, you’ll want to order DISCOVERY GIRLS today.
A magazine created for and by girls ages 7-12! Discovery Girls is a forum for girls to both express their ideas/dreams and address their fears. With articles on middle school challenges, inspiring stories about exceptional teens, sports, contests, quizzes, “embarrassing moments”, fashion and more!

subscription – Dawn M. Dimartino – Mpls, Mn
Ordered this subscription July 31,2009 and as of September 12, 2009 she still has not received a magazine.
Cover: Why would 8-12 yr old need to be A NEW YOU??? – Brogan –
Why in the world would an 8 to 12 year old little girl need to be encouraged to be “A NEW YOU!” as the August/September 2009 cover of this magazine suggests??? What is so wrong or bad about a young girl that they need to be encouraged to change?
Haven’t we learned how damaging adult feminine magazines can be to the self-esteem and perception of grown women due to the covers showing models and Hollywood stars airbrushed to perfection? A child’s magazine should be positive, encouraging children/young persons to accept themselves, value their individuality and feel good about who they are now, NOT who they CAN be by reading this magazine and changing themselves in some way. I am outraged by this!
Also, what little girl aged 8, 9 or 10 years old is concerned about crushes on boys and being popular? And what parent wants their daughter to be? It’s sad that those issues are more prevalent in 11 and 12 year old girl’s lives, but do we have to encourage this sort of thinking?
There are reasons that young girls feel that they are valued for how they look and not how intelligent they are and it is because of messages that they receive about females and beauty all around them in their daily lives. From the Disney Princess line of perfect beauties to clothing that is sold for their young age group, which are mostly mini versions of suggestive teenage styles which are designed to get the attention of boys, young men and even grown men by being too short, low-cut and/or made of sheer see-through type of material.
Let little girls be little girls and let’s expect more of our gender than to be an attractive asset. Let’s teach our daughters to feel confident as they are and to accept themselves as a person, not just as a female. That will enable our girls to be valuable contributors to the world we live in for what they do as individual people: as mothers, executives, nurses, teachers, doctors, etc. not for how they look, how popular they are, etc.
~RAM
